Remember New Orleans? Feature Shoot with Rob w/1 B

August 23, 2009

For several years now my vagabond friend Rob Huffman (he blogs HERE under the pseudonym Rob w/1 B). Rob has been to Cuba several times with IFCO, an organization dedicated to ending the US embargo on Cuba (read about them HERE). Among other things they attempt to bring attention to the absurdity of the now anachronistic cold war embargo on the island nation. This last trip the Cuban nation gave back in the form of intestinal worms.

When he isn’t in Cuba he has been working at one of only two schools in the 9th Ward in New Orleans. Here is a video The School at Blair Grocery…

The video does a far better job of describing what Nat Turner and Rob are trying to do than I could. Recently The Blair School have applied for a a grant from the Kellog Foundation to continue their work.

Listening to Rob talk about the school and the difficulties of life in the lower 9th Ward I knew there was a story I wanted to tell. He mentioned that he would like to have a handful of DSLRs and Digicams to use in an art class for the students (currently they have 10 students). So hopefully, if I can find a backer I will travel to the Lower 9th to document The Blair School and teach the kids a bit about photography. Of course funding for that kind of thing is hard to come by these days so I may end up footing the bill myself.

Before Rob left for NOLA in his brick red VW Bus I called him up and asked if he had time for a quick portrait. I wanted a good portrait of Rob before he left to help with promoting our little scheme.

The light was a little hazy due to the Lockheed Fire just over the ridge behind my apartment so we went in to the “court yard” or my imitation palatial apartment and made a handful of images.

rob-with-one-b-1-16

In my mind the unkempt disarray of our “court yard” seemed to fit in perfect with the images Rob had painted in my head with his descriptions of a 9th Ward largely forgotten by the Federal Government and the news media. And no, he is always that skinny. I have no idea what those stomach worms survived on.

I honestly have no idea how I make these connections in my head any more than I know how all this detritus from all the tenants who’ve ever lived here in our little South Felton Ghetto apartment has collected in such a perfect way but it all seemed to congeal for our little photo shoot.

rob-with-one-b-1-27

So Rob is telling me about how the levies everywhere are being built up high and the city is being restored – except in the Lower 9th (where all the poor people live). The difficulty of bringing a civilizing agent like education to a part of town that as he describes it sounds more akin to the para-apocalyptic descriptions of a Palahniuk or McCarthy novel . And I think, “huh, ok then, climb up on that stair master with your beer.”

rob-with-one-b-1-4

So here is the deal. I need 5-10 Digital SLRs. They don’t have to be fancy. Just a body with a 35mm lens (on the crop sensor 35 is closer to a 50mm lens), and 5-10 little digicams to take to the school. Oh, and if you wouldn’t mind kicking down some cash for travel and expenses that would be rad as well. And you would be a huge help if you would share this post with your friends. Working under the 6 degrees of separation theory I’m hoping that someone knows someone who knows someone who will help me get my little documentary published – any where.

For you photographers, the shots were done with 2 SB 600s on stands to each side of Rob with gobos to block flair from the strobes reaching the lens. One SB 800 on camera with one of those over priced Garry Fong Lightspheres as a diffuser on camera acting as the master controller through CLS. And yes I know I got some shadow on the fence. If you are so upset about it then send me a couple more strobes and next time I will also light the fence.

Flashing People on the Street.

August 10, 2009

I don’t know what it is about the Bay Area but we suffer from a glut* of photographers. Every Tom-Dick-and-Jane with enough money for a digital camera is now a photographer. But that is a whole other discussion (don’t get me started on fighting with Uncle Bob & Aunt Jane at weddings with their big zoom lenses getting in the way).

One would think with so many photographers around it would be a snap to find a fellow creative to collaborate with.

uh, not so much.

So when I met Brandon while shooting our World Record Afro Wig Photo Shoot and he, like me, was down for working together I was stoked.

Today Brandon texted me to see if I wanted to head downtown and try and grab some portraits on the street. That turned out to be a bust as it was ri-donkulously hot. We did come across one of my favorite portrait subjects – The Great Morgani. I’ve got gigabytes of images of him, just do a search on this blog and he’ll come up. He is always patient for the camera and his outfits are so far out and well done you would be dull in the head not to photograph him.

Brandon has been wanting to work with me for a while to hone is off camera flash skills so we set up and started shooting away.

Here is Brandon.

I read all the time on forums about how mid day sun is the worst time to shoot and how using off camera flash in bright sun is oh so hard. The key, they will tell you, is to get your subject into the shade. Failing that you have to get them to face the sun and hope for the best. This is all well and good but the problem is sometimes you can’t move your subject or to do so would ruin the mood. I of course didn’t know about these “rules” when I started incorporating strobes or flashes in my street photography. I had to try something else. If my subject is in direct sun with their back to the sun (most sane people don’t like to squint into the sun so they turn their back to it) I use the sun as a giant rim light and then my little strobes do the work of filling in the shadows. The result is the subject pops out of the background. I thought I was a genius for about 2.5 seconds for figuring this out then I found out it is all old school after reading about it on David Hobby’s Strobist Blog
**. Oh well. I love the result so who cares. I use this technique all the time in my street photography and as it turns out it works really well at weddings. I’m in Santa Cruz so I shoot a lot of weddings on the beach. Most of those weddings are right in the middle of the day with the hardest harshest light you can imagine. No one likes squinty eyes in formals right? But where are you gonna find shade on the beach? No problem I say. Turn your groups away from the sun and flash them – er, fire off the strobes that is.

For example here is a shot of The Great Morgani. Back to sun (cause, you know, duh it is bright). Pretty boring image. It is a snap shot and not that interesting.

But add a little flash and the image comes to life.

the-great-morgani-1-2

This was two strobes, one on camera and one in my hand, both dialed up a bit. Of course it doesn’t hurt that TGM is a real performer and with out any coaching from me through in that added bit of flare.

* glut is the right word right?
**seriously. if you are at all serious about photography and want to learn how to effectively use your flash you gotta check out Strobist. He puts all his knowledge up on the web for free.

Street Portraits

July 27, 2009

today i tried something i’ve been thinking about for a while. i’ve been wanting to set up and do portraits of people on the street, i just haven’t worked out exactly how to go about doing so. i still haven’t. but i went out and did it anyway. i was going for a certain look, kind of a non-posed semi-editorial look. while i think i came close i still need to work out some kinks. the major one of getting people to step in front of the camera. i also think next time i will have a back drop, which will be interesting because the Downtown Association has some pretty complicated ordinances regarding what you can do and where you can do it downtown.

at any rate, following are a couple of images from this first attempt.

street-portraits-72609-1

i like the expressions on their faces, but i think i want to use harder, more directional light next time. maybe i throw on some snoots.

street-portraits-72609-1-2

i like the light a little better in this one but like the above image there is something missing still. in both images i think the addition of a white back drop would help focus the eye on the subject as well as let me shoot a bit more stopped down so i have a better chance of having a sharp image across the frame. which of course means i need to build a back drop or bring along an assistant to hold a very large foam core board. given my run in with the Downtown folks and their little ordinances the latter might be the best option. apparently if i have a backdrop that touches the ground i would need a permit AND can’t be with in 10 feet of a building, tree, sculpture, sign, cross walk, corner, inner section, etc…

frustrated with the results i packed up the gear slapped on a prime lens and captured these little gems.

Weekend Images: Holly and Andrew, Street, The Great Morgani

July 13, 2009

this weekend offered, if no paying gigs, a variety of interesting people to shoot. first my good friends Andrew and Holly were back in town from Berkeley. i shot their wedding in Aptos. we strolled down Pacific Ave for a bit catching up. then Andrew and my two votes for beers out numbered Holly’s solitary vote for hot chocolate so we wound up at 99 Bottles. i’m friends with one of the staff and she hooked Holly up with some hot chocolate she found in the back. so everyone was happy.

holly-and-andrew-1-6 Andrew is getting his masters, or PhD or something like that in advanced intelligence or superior genius or something or other. he is fascinating to talk and listen too. he also talks with his hands. despite how it looks he isn’t talking about a big fish that got away.

of course holly is simply amazing. this is her “Thank god school is out for the summer” look. she teaches up in the East Bay. they are both looking to move back down to Santa Cruz sometime in the future. which would be rad.

The Ring Shot

June 14, 2009

Instead of traditional rings Allan and Brenna went with something a little more permanent – namely tattoos on their ring fingers. Kind of funny how you can pay more for a pair of rings that you can take off or loose but the relatively cheap tattoos these two got are permanent.

My buddy Mac at The Gilded Lilly just up the road from my house in Felton did me a solid favor and came in on his day off to do their tattoos for them. Thanks Mac. If you are ever in the area and need some work done he is your man, hands down one the best tattoo artist in California.

Here Allan grows a little impatient. And maybe a little nervous.

Allan and Brenna Rock Davenport Landing Beach

June 14, 2009

Back in the day I worked at a summer camp here in Santa Cruz and I made a tons of good friends. One of them was Allan Scronce. His nickname was “marbles” because he was always loosing things – as in he lost his marbles. Allan is one of those guys who has a rare sense of humor. Once, to get even for a prank someone played on him he drove his car into a field, dug a hole with a back hoe and then buried the car!

A few months ago Allan sent me a message via Facebook to let me know that he was getting married and to ask me to shoot the ceremony. As we chatted a bit about what he and Brenna his bride wanted their wedding day to be like and what they wanted from the images I got more and more excited. They were planning on having the wedding on the beach for one, and I just happen to love shooting on the beach. I know some photographers shy away from shooting on the beach at mid-day – the hard sunlight and bright sand make for tricky exposures, squinting eyes, and on occasion a burned up strobe. But I get excited. I don’t know what I love more, the images I get or the freedom to shoot a wedding bare foot!

The reception was at Brenna’s family cabin at Mount Hermon. It’s a nice little cabin in the woods where both families got together to celebrate with a few drinks and some home style music.

At this point you have to be asking yourself “What about the rings?”
